Comfort on a foam sleeping mat?

You could say common wisdom is inflated pads are more comfortable, and thus when buying a foam mat what you pick does not matter much. I found out it is difficult to find a comfortable mat so the the first sentiment is justified to some degree, but the second is completely wrong. Let me tell you my purchases story.
